“And the 80s were a brutal, brutal time for people. It was a f***ing mess. And like, you know, people forget that it was like, that was a tremendous strife, socio-political tensions everywhere. We’re still pretty fresh off a Cuban Missile Crisis, which was only about 15 or 20 years before. So, you know, it’s a tumultuous period, but you look back at it now, and you’re like, oh yeah, Top Gun, cocaine. Like, no, it was really scary.”

We just don’t know it.”

The discussion followed the premiere of Reynolds’ new movie Mayday, which draws heavily from the era he was discussing. The Apple Original Films action comedy is set during the Cold War in 1987.
