TikTok food influencer Georges Dib, better known online as Doctor Food, has been arrested in Lebanon over drug-related allegations involving confectionery products manufactured by his businesses.
Dib has built a huge following through food and lifestyle content, with more than eight million followers on TikTok. He also owns a confectionery business.
However, the influencer had been wanted by Lebanese authorities for years and was previously sentenced to life in prison in absentia for drug trafficking, according to AFP.
Lebanon’s National News Agency previously reported that authorities seized confectionery and other food products at Beirut’s international airport that allegedly contained narcotics and were manufactured at factories owned by Dib.
The products were reportedly intended to be shipped to a Gulf country, while Dib was accused of manufacturing, trafficking and smuggling narcotics abroad.
Doctor Food arrested after month-long police search
Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces confirmed Dib’s arrest on August 23, saying he was wanted under two judicial warrants for a drug-related offense.
Police said the arrest followed a month of investigations and surveillance before officers raided his home in the Rahbeh area of Akkar in northern Lebanon.
Authorities also claimed Dib had been taking steps to avoid being located while continuing to create social media content. The influencer would film his videos before deliberately leaving his residence and frequently changing the vehicles and phone numbers he used in an attempt to evade surveillance.
Investigators eventually located Dib and arrested him at his home. He was subsequently referred to the relevant authorities for further legal proceedings.
A judicial source told AFP that Dib is expected to be transferred to a detention center in Mount Lebanon, where he will face another trial over further drug trafficking charges.
Despite the previous arrest warrant and his conviction in absentia, Dib had continued regularly uploading content to TikTok. After reports of his conviction surfaced in July, he denied the accusations in a video and urged his followers not to believe what was being said about him.
Dib remains one of the largest food creators on TikTok, having amassed millions of followers through videos centered on cooking, restaurants and his daily life.
