An indie developer has created a, let’s say interesting, browser game that turns talking to your crush into a Soulslike, replacing traditional dialogue choices with attacks, parries and dodges where picking the wrong response will result in instant death.
Kobayakawa-san Is a Soulslike takes the familiar concept of an interactive dating game and turns it on its head. Instead of choosing the perfect response to your crush’s burning questions to develop your relationship, each interaction is a fight for survival.
Dating your crush is basically a boss fight
Rather than being presented with conventional dialogue options, players are given four choices when responding to their crush: Light Attack, Heavy Attack, Parry or Dodge.
Each effectively serves as your answer to statements or questions, meaning figuring out the correct response requires reading the situation much like you would an enemy attack in a Soulslike. Oh, and you’re timed on your response, too. Contemplate too long, and you’re dead.
Just replace the demon eager to smush you into paste with a classmate ready to quiz you on the mystery girl you were with last night, and the two games are almost indistinguishable.

Choose correctly, and the conversation continues while depleting the ‘boss’ health bar. Get it wrong, however, and you’ll instantly be killed and sent back to a previous checkpoint.
Kobayakawa-san Is a Soulslike can be played for free directly via a browser version, with the developer estimating that a playthrough takes around five minutes. Downloadable and mobile versions of the game are also available.
The English version is available now, meaning anyone confident enough in both their dating instincts and Soulslike reflexes can see whether they survive the conversation.
Easily accessible browser games have been pushing all sorts of interesting concepts of late. Earlier in August, one developer created a driving game that lets you drive anywhere on Earth using a real-world map.
