Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom has officially declared his eligibility for the 2027 WNBA Draft.
“Based on the current guidelines, I can and am officially declaring my eligibility for the upcoming WNBA draft in April 2027,” Kanter wrote in an August 7 post.
Kanter tied the declaration directly to the debate surrounding gender eligibility in women’s sports, saying he and his team reviewed the league’s latest guidance and inclusion standards before reaching the decision.
He acknowledged that his announcement would provoke strong reactions but insisted that he was not attempting to mock or disrespect any community.
What the WNBA’s rules actually say
Article XIII of the league’s official 2026 collective bargaining agreement states: “Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.”
The document does not separately define “woman” or outline a specific policy for transgender players. However, it also does not state that self-identification alone makes someone eligible.
Prospective draft picks must satisfy additional age and college eligibility requirements, while some players must formally notify the league that they are renouncing their remaining college eligibility. Kanter’s social media post does not show that he has completed any official WNBA process.
The announcement arrives amid a wider debate surrounding transgender participation in women’s sports. Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham has spoken against transgender women competing in the women’s category, while Caitlin Clark said leagues and governing bodies should work with athletes to establish their own policies.
No openly transgender woman has played in the WNBA.
This is also not the first time Kanter has made the argument. During a 2023 interview, he claimed he would average “60 points and 30 rebounds” if he were permitted to compete in the WNBA.
For now, his latest declaration remains a social media protest rather than an official entry into the 2027 WNBA Draft.
