Teton Science Schools was founded in 1967 by Ted Major, a visionary science teacher who believed students learn best through direct experiences in nature. He launched the school with a group of twelve high school students, engaging them in immersive outdoor research and exploration within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Wyoming Girl School
The Wyoming Girls School (WGS) is a therapeutic and educational facility dedicated to the treatment and development of court-ordered delinquent girls between the ages of 12 and 21. Located at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains in Sheridan, Wyoming, WGS provides a safe, nurturing, and trauma-responsive community where girls can receive the care and guidance they need. The school’s mission is to offer therapeutic and educational services that promote healing, accountability, and the development of socially responsible values in preparation for a successful reintegration into family and community life.
WGS offers gender-specific programming focused on behavioral health, academic education, and life skills development. Each girl is guided to take personal accountability for her actions while working toward individualized goals. Discharge dates are not fixed but are determined by a Multidisciplinary Team based on each resident’s academic progress, behavioral health achievements, and overall success in the program. Transition services are closely coordinated with local Department of Family Services (DFS) offices to support a smooth reentry into the community.
Each resident is assigned a case manager who maintains regular communication with the resident’s family, probation officer, and other stakeholders. Families and relevant parties receive updates through monthly service plan review meetings, typically conducted via phone conference. Court-ordered Multidisciplinary Team meetings and review hearings are also scheduled as needed. In addition, written updates on the resident’s service plan are provided quarterly. WGS emphasizes the importance of family involvement and encourages families to reach out to the resident’s case manager with any questions or concerns.
Communication between residents and their families or legal representatives is carefully managed to protect both therapeutic goals and individual rights. Residents have the right to confidential communication with attorneys, Guardians ad Litem, judges, law enforcement agents, advocacy groups, probation officers, and parents or legal guardians—subject to applicable guidelines. Weekly contact with approved individuals is allowed through phone calls and video chats. Additional contact may be approved based on specific circumstances. Residents are also permitted to send and receive letters and packages from individuals on their approved contact list, with postage costs covered by WGS. Contact lists are developed and approved by the DFS probation officer and may include family members, foster family members, or adult mentors.
Visitation is an important part of a resident’s therapeutic process and is carefully structured based on her progress. All visitors must be included on the resident’s approved contact list, and all visits must be scheduled in advance through the resident’s case manager or dorm supervisor. Visitation typically begins on campus and may later expand to the resident’s home community as she advances through the program.

Wyoming Connections Academy is a tuition-free, K–12 online public school program that allows students across the state to learn from the comfort of their own homes.
