In contrast to the remedial bilingual education model, which aims to bring English Language Learners (ELL’s) up to speed in English so they can be mainstreamed, dual language immersion is an enrichment model that challenges all students to become fluent in two languages. Classes are often taught by two teachers who each speak exclusively in one language. There is no translation or repeated lessons. Native English speakers and ELLs learn a second language together with no stigma attached.

The recent move away from traditional bilingual education toward English language immersion was meant to help ELLs catch up with English speaking peers. Instead, standardized test scores from 2003 to 2010 show a widening achievement gap. Numerous studies demonstrate that ELLs become more fluent in English when they learn to read in their primary language. In 2004, Virginia P. Collier and Wayne P. Thomas from George Mason University published an 18-year longitudinal study of dual language programs in 23 school districts and 15 states. They found that dual language immersion fully closes the achievement gap between ELLs and native speakers of English.

University High School

University High School is a 9th-12th grade, a free public charter high school located on the campus of California State University, Fresno. University High School provides an accelerated college preparatory education to approximately 480 students who share a common interest in music. Students receive a strong foundation in music and the liberal arts and sciences in a small high school environment while benefiting from the opportunities available on a large public university campus.

University High School traditionally accepts incoming 9th graders who apply in their 8th-grade year. Depending on their current class capacity, University High School also accepts transfer students who wish to enter University High School in their 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade year. University High School suggests all interested parents and students come to their informational days in the Fall and Winter.

All students who attend University High School will master content and engage in skills that we think to prepare all students for whatever choice they make when they leave high school. All students benefit from attending University High School, although University High School is not the school for everyone. Students need to be committed to the program we offer to be successful. University High School is a free public charter school that is located on the Fresno State campus. We offer a college preparatory curriculum in a supportive environment with small class size and free tutorial services. We enroll approximately 130 students of incoming freshmen who are selected through a lottery process. We encourage all potential applicants and a parent to attend one of their Information Days. These orientations provide you the opportunity to learn about their program and tour the UHS campus.

If you are considering UHS for your student, you must ask yourself two questions:

  • Does my child have a sincere interest in music? In order to apply, students must have two years of music instruction. They can achieve this by singing in a choir, taking private music lessons or playing an instrument in their middle school band or orchestra. Their interest in music must be genuine as they will play or sing in one of their ensembles during their four years with us. They will also take four years of music theory.
  • Is my child willing to work hard in a demanding academic environment? Their students enroll in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. During their junior and senior years, they will be enrolled in AP classes and will take courses at Fresno State University. They must be willing to meet the challenges of ther program

Students are selected and invited to attend based on a composite of their performance on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) and an ABC district writing assessment.

The Whitney Early College Program started it’s inaugural cohort in the 2021-2022 school year. Thirty rising 9th grade students are selected annually for this program through an application process. The main goal is to prepare students to pursue a post-secondary education at a four-year college or university. A student who completes the program will meet ABCUSD high school graduation requirements and the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) requirements through Cerritos College.

This allows students to complete lower division course requirements at the University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU). Twenty-one students remain in Cohort 1 (Class of 2025) and each of these students are working towards completing one or two additional Dual Enrollment courses to earn their Associates Degree (AA). Class of 2025 will be the first class at their school, and within the ABC Unified District, to complete and graduate from this program.

Welcome to the new school year! On behalf of the entire California Elementary School team, we are excited to kick off another fantastic year committed to ensuring the success of every student.

California Elementary School proudly offers a strong academic program enhanced by numerous enriching opportunities. This year, our Visual and Performing Arts Program will include weekly Music, along with our traditional visual and performing arts experiences. We will also continue our weekly SEL/Physical Education program for all students. In addition to our core academic curriculum, our students benefit from targeted digital lessons with iReady Reading and Math and 95% Core Phonics. We are excited to prepare our students for their future.

At California Elementary, we understand the importance of developing social and emotional skills. Last year, we were recognized as a National Showcase School for Capturing Kids’ Hearts for the seventh consecutive year! Feeling connected to school is crucial for students, so we offer a variety of after-school opportunities, including Speech & Debate, Ukulele, tutoring, sports and Science Club, as well as other enrichment opportunities. 

Restorative practices are an integral part of our approach to fostering a positive and inclusive school environment. This year, our Cheetahs will utilize the 3 Be’s (Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful) to guide their behavior in alignment with our school-wide expectations.
