Former Rockstar dev says threat of unofficial AI ports could force GTA 6 onto PC sooner

Former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij believes GTA 6 could come to PC sooner than expected, as Rockstar may want to get ahead of unofficial ports made with AI.

GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar has yet to announce a PC version.

AI ports could threaten GTA 6 PC sales

Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun, Vermeij said the rise of AI tools could change how Rockstar approaches the PC release.

“It really has changed the world, and I think I would be concerned, if I was Rockstar, that somebody would just take the PS5 version and get AI to change it to PC,” he said.

He added that a port like that “won’t be as good as their effort, but it could still also hurt their sales.”

“So, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an effort to get [the releases] a little bit closer together,” he continued. “Obviously, I don’t really know what they’re thinking.”

Unofficial GTA 6 PC port would cost “tens of thousands”

Vermeij doesn’t think an unofficial port would be quick or cheap to make, but he still expects someone to try.

“It will take a long time. It actually, physically takes hours and hours and hours to do these things. And it will take a bunch of tokens and everything, so it would probably cost like, tens of thousands of dollars in tokens,” he said.

“But like, you know, if it’s GTA, I think people are gonna try it.”

Rockstar has historically released its games on PC later than on consoles. GTA 5 arrived on PC in 2015, around 18 months after it launched on PS4 and Xbox One, and Red Dead Redemption 2 followed a year after its console release.
