House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed his dismay after President Trump promoted Stephen Miller as the new Chief of Staff.

Stephen Miller’s promotion drew a blunt response from Hakeem Jeffries. On his personal X account, the Democrat shared his reaction hours after the announcement. In it, the House minority leader demanded Miller’s immediate dismissal as the new Chief of Staff. The Democrat wrote the following, using his own characterization of Miller:
“Stephen Miller is a dangerous xenophobe and reckless extremist who has American blood on his hands. His presence in government should be eradicated like a malignant tumor. Fire him today.”
President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that Miller would become chief of staff on Monday, November 9, 2026. The switch came days after Republicans lost the House and Senate in Tuesday’s midterms. Before his promotion, Miller served as deputy chief of staff and was widely described as the architect of the administration’s immigration crackdown.

Hakeem Jeffries did not limit himself to the policy record. He called Miller a xenophobe and a reckless extremist, then reached for a medical metaphor to argue for his removal. That is unusually personal language for a party leader reacting to a staffing change. The chief of staff runs the White House and negotiates with Congress on the president’s behalf. As minority leader, Jeffries would sit across from Miller in those talks. He believes that Miller should not hold a government post at all.
Other Democrats framed the same objection differently on social media. California Governor Gavin Newsom called the promotion an insult to Americans who voted against extremism. On the other hand, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer believes the president failed to receive the message the American people tried to send after the midterm elections. The senator called Miller the architect of the most barbaric, inhumane policies of this administration. Despite the promotion, Schumer said Democratic majorities would fight him every step of the way. Hakeem Jeffries ended his message on a much harsher note by calling for Miller’s immediate removal.
