Google said schools that reject its AI tools would also lose Google Search. Mayor Zohran Mamdani answered on X on November 3, 2026, framing the policy as corporate pressure.

“Google is trying to use its monopoly power to force AI into our public schools. No corporation should have the power to dictate how we teach our children. Our public schools exist to serve students, not to grow the profit margins of Big Tech.”

Mamdani has run New York City since January 1, 2026, when he took the oath as its first Muslim mayor. On September 2, 2026, his administration imposed a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI from 2-K through eighth grade. That covers nearly 600,000 students, about two-thirds of the country’s largest school system. Companion chatbots are barred in every grade. “Children need teachers and human connection in order to learn and grow,” Mamdani said when he announced it.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Shared His Reaction to Google Forcing AI Into Public Schools

Google’s November 3, 2026, blog post listed Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Search. All four stay off for K-12 accounts until administrators turn them on. Chris Phillips is Google’s vice president and general manager of education. He told The New York Times that Search and AI are “deeply integrated.” Students at schools that block AI “will not have access to search,” Phillips said. Google later said schools could switch on Search without the standalone AI apps. That did not settle the objection, because Search itself now carries AI Mode and AI Overviews.

The pushback reached far beyond New York. Lina Khan chaired the Federal Trade Commission from 2021 to 2025. She wrote on X on November 3, 2026, that Google was using its search monopoly to “coerce schools into adopting AI.” Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont called the same leverage “extortion” in a post that day. A Google spokesperson declined to respond to Mamdani’s remarks, CBS News reported.
