A professional wrestler who portrays a corrupt politician in the ring has been elected mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, proving that sometimes the bad guy really does win.
David Morales, a 28-year-old Democrat and state representative, defeated Republican Dave Talan in the November 3 election, securing approximately 81% of the vote compared to his opponent’s 17%.
According to Rhode Island Current, Morales will become the youngest mayor in Providence history when he takes office in January 2027.
However, his political career isn’t the only thing that makes him stand out. Morales also happens to be a three-time wrestling champion who plays an evil politician.
Evil politician wrestler becomes real-life mayor
Since 2021, Morales has competed in Rhode Island’s Renegade Wrestling Alliance under the name “The Commissioner,” portraying an arrogant political authority figure who loves getting under the crowd’s skin.
He’s even won the promotion’s Hype Championship three times, and once introduced a fictional rule requiring the champion to carry their title belt everywhere, including the statehouse.
In an October 2025 interview with Ocean State Media, Morales discussed the similarities between his two careers.
“I think there’s a lot of overlap,” he said. “Including showmanship, theater, athleticism, drama and humor.”
Ironically, Morales believes politicians have actually started taking too much inspiration from professional wrestling, warning that copying the exaggerated promos of WWE stars can lead to extremist rhetoric.
His wrestling career even became a talking point during the election campaign.
According to The Boston Globe, political opponents distributed campaign materials featuring Morales in his wrestling attire, accusing him of being “all hype, no results.”
Clearly, voters weren’t particularly bothered by his extracurricular activities.
Morales announced his semi-retirement from wrestling while pursuing the mayor’s office, but hasn’t ruled out stepping back into the ring.
“Never say never in the world of professional wrestling,” he said.
Of course, Morales isn’t the first wrestler to trade the squared circle for public office.
WWE legend Kane, whose real name is Glenn Jacobs, was elected mayor of Knox County, Tennessee, which includes Knoxville, in 2018. He served until 2026 and even found time to reignite the debate over whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie while in office.
Former WWE star Jesse Ventura also famously became governor of Minnesota in 1999.
With Morales now heading to City Hall, Providence residents will have to wait and see whether The Commissioner makes an appearance during his time in office.
