On November 1, 2026, the X account @clashreport posted a clip of President Donald Trump telling a crowd in Iowa that he would have won the Vietnam War in a week.

The caption on the post made the point bluntly: Trump argued the U.S. spent years bombing forests instead of going after Ho Chi Minh City.

He was speaking in Dubuque, two days before the midterm elections, and running through the wars he says he would have handled differently. While talking about the Vietnam War, he said:

“I could have won the Vietnam War in a week. You know?”

The US President said the U.S. had sprayed Agent Orange over forests for years instead of going after cities. He stated:

“Agent Orange, they dropped it in the forest for years and years and years, instead of going after the Ho Chi Minh City and the different places. I would have won that war in one week.”

A Community Note under posts sharing the clip supplied the history. Saigon, it said, was the capital of U.S.-allied South Vietnam during the war, while Hanoi ran the north. The city took Ho Chi Minh’s name only after Saigon fell in April 1975.

American aircraft did hit the north. Operation Rolling Thunder bombed North Vietnam from March 1965 to October 1968, according to Air & Space Forces Magazine, and the Linebacker raids of 1972 struck Hanoi and Haiphong.

Trump has made the claim before, with a different timetable: in a Fox News interview, he said he would have finished the war in three or four months.
