After ChatGPT provided a 31-year-old woman with incorrect medical advice, its owner, OpenAI, is facing a wrongful death lawsuit.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, is currently facing a wrongful death lawsuit after ChatGPT’s botched medical advice. The victim is identified as Bowen Wan, a 31-year-old software engineer residing in Seattle. According to reports, the artificial intelligence chatbot advised Wan to stop taking her medications. Wan was taking anti-seizure medications, and the chatbot devised a plan that removed them, leading to her death.
Bowen Wan’s parents, Qun Wan and Meiqin Xu, are represented by the Schenk Law Firm and Social Media Victims Law Center. According to the official complaint, the AI chatbot urged Wan to ignore the advice of medical professionals.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Is Facing a Wrongful Death Lawsuit Due to ChatGPT’s Incorrect Medical Advice

According to the victim’s parents, they sent someone to visit their daughter after she was unresponsive. Bowen Wan died on February 12, 2026, due to complications with epilepsy. However, her parents were confused, considering she was able to manage her condition for almost a decade. Her parents also revealed Bowen would consult directly with ChatGPT for medical advice and encouraged her to evade her physician’s instructions.
Earlier this month, Mark Guiducci of Vanity Fair asked the OpenAI CEO about another case that involved suicide after speaking to their chatbot. Wrongful death cases are becoming more frequent. Wan’s parents are seeking compensatory and punitive damages. At the moment of writing, Sam Altman has not released a statement about Wan’s death.
