Student dressed as Spider-Man earns $3 million by nailing field goal kick

A student from Brigham Young University nailed a field goal kick on ESPN and earned himself $3 million in the process.

College GameDay is a live pregame show broadcast by ESPN, centred around college football. On Saturday October 17, the show hit Provo, Utah ahead of the BYU Cougars’ matchup against Notre Dame.

Each week on the show, analyst Pat McAfee hosts his ‘Kicking is Easy’ contest, which sees a student plucked from the crowd and asked to kick a 33-yard field goal through the posts to win a prize of $1 million. However, a much bigger prize was offered to one student this week.

The student missed his first kick

The $1 million prize is usually made up of $500,000 from McAfee and a $500,000 match from Home Depot. However, Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith and his business partner Ryan Sweeney, themselves BYU and Notre Dame graduates respectively, agreed to add another $1 million each.

The student, who was dressed as Spider-Man for the kick, actually missed his first shot. McAfee gave Carter a second chance, while ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit offered him some advice.

Then, on his second chance to claim the $3 million, Carter pulled off the kick perfectly and ensured he was taking home the prize.

Carter was then rushed by onlooking BYU fans who held him up on their shoulders to celebrate. McAfee handed Carter a novelty giant check with $100,000 on it, before adding a ‘3’ and a few more zeros with a marker.
