Kevin Hart speaks about feeling gratitude towards life and family following near-fatal car accident six years ago.

Kevin Hart recently opened up about his new outlook on life following a near-fatal car crash in 2019. Speaking to Brian Underwood on the latter’s Be You with BU podcast, the actor admitted that he had “never received a bigger punch from life.”
He said:
“It really made me realize that you have no control over life. You have no control, and I was an ‘I, I, I’ person. ‘I gotta,’ ‘I’m doing me,’ ‘I gotta, I gotta,’ and I really spoke in a way like I got it all figured out, I’m in control of everything, there’s nothing that can’t stop me. And then drop of a dime, ‘Oh **** it’s almost all gone.’ You’re almost paralyzed, you’re centimeters away from never walking again, almost dead. The realization that you have to take from that is I’ve never got, I never received a bigger punch from life.
He added:
“That was the biggest punch that life could give you, and it made you respect and appreciate not what you have, but the people that you have. It made me respect and appreciate my wife and my kids more.”
Kevin Hart says he “grabbed the reality of the moment” in life following car crash
On September 1, 2019, Hart was a passenger in his 1970 Plymouth Barracuda driven by friend Jared Black on Mulholland Highway near Malibu Hills, California, when the latter lost control and crashed into an embankment. Following back surgery for three spinal fractures, the comedian spent 10 days hospitalized. By his own admission, the experience brought him closer to his wife, Eniko Parrish, and his four children.

He said:
“Now, you start to ask yourself other questions like, ‘**** man, am I giving enough time to my family? Have I really given enough?’ Yeah, I work and I do it but have I really given the proper amount of time to those that I love? Because at the end of the day, when I was in that hospital nothing else mattered except the people that I love. Nothing else was around, the material **** that I have, that I spent all this money on the house, the watches, the cars, the jets, that wasn’t there.”
Hart also maintained that he could see the silver lining to his accident.
He added:
“All that was there was your ******* kids and your wife in this little square box. So for me, coming out of it, I improved. You got to find a light, man. There’s got to be a light in everything ******* dark. If it just stay dark and you don’t see a light, then you’re making a mistake. You’re not seeing something, you’re not grabbing hold of the reality of the moment, and I grabbed that reality of the moment. And I still got a grasp on it.”
Although Hart suffered a tough physical ordeal, he has since had several box-office successes, such as Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019), and DC League of Super-Pets (2022).
