On October 13, 2026, comedian and actor Ben Stiller reacted to New York City appearing to ban horse-drawn carriages. The old tradition, rooted in the culture of the region, appears to be coming to an end within the next two years.

Complex reported on the matter, noting that Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin had approached a deal to close the industry by June 2028. Citing public safety and animal welfare as the reasons behind the move, the caption read:

“NYC is moving to ban horse-drawn carriages after nearly 200 years of history. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin reached a deal to phase out the industry by June 2028, citing public safety concerns and long-standing criticism over animal welfare.”

Stiller reacted to the news, writing:

“Long overdue.”

Under his post, an X user said this amounted to virtue signaling and the end of a tradition. The comedian responded, calling it “cruel and archaic.” He said:

“I’ve grown up here and watched what the horses go through. It’s cruel and archaic, so sorry, I disagree. All the best.”

German singer and songwriter Kim Petras recently shared her thoughts on Zohran Mamdani’s decision to ban horse-drawn carriages. On X, she said she would send him a personal copy of her latest album, Detour. The New York mayor had previously revealed that he was a fan of Petras’ music. She wrote:

“Zohran I can finally send you Detour.”

This post was a callback to an earlier one from Petras. In December 2025, the German singer had said she would gift Mamdani her album if he banned horse carriages from Central Park. Sharing a clip from an article where the mayor revealed his love for Petras’ music, she wrote this on X:

“Zohran Mamdani, I am willing to privately send you my new album if we can get the horse carriages banned from Central Park.”
