Parents rally behind school bus driver fired for letting student rescue injured kitten

A school bus driver was fired from her route after stopping the bus to allow a student to rescue an injured kitten.

Cynthia Morgan has been a driver for Harford County Public Schools in Maryland for 11 years. According to some parents, she has a reputation as a popular, well-liked member of the community.

Morgan was recently fired from her route after stopping and allowing a child to get off the bus and rescue a kitten on Heaps School Road in Pylesville.

The student held the cat all the way to school

Morgan had told 10-year-old Alex to retrieve the kitten from the side of the road. The youngster did so and held the cat for the rest of the journey to school. As per The Independent, the student’s mother, Taffy Thomas, said she was “100% behind” the bus driver’s decision.

Morgan received a letter district Transportation Director Danielle Bedsaul. In the letter, Bedsaul mentions “multiple incidents” involving Morgan and “concerns regarding inappropriate interactions with students.”

Nevertheless, many parents came out in support of Morgan. “The fact that she was let go because of an act of kindness does really weigh on [her son],” said the student’s mother. “That is unforgivable and cruel.”

The letter expressed concerns about Morgan driving with the cat on her lap afterward.

One parent launched a petition to have Morgan reinstated. ”Over the years, Cynthia has become more than just a bus driver to our children; she is someone they look forward to seeing every morning and afternoon,” it reads. “Her kind and warm nature makes the pupils feel safe and comfortable.”

”Certification and decertification are not always based on a single factor but often involve consideration of multiple circumstances and requirements,” the school district said in a statement. “Student safety remains our top priority, and all certification decisions are made with that responsibility in mind.”
