Black Clover is a world-renowned shonen manga by Yuki Tabata, published in both Weekly Shonen Jump and Jump GIGA. The series has found great success despite the long hiatuses that plagued the manga and anime. After a sustained run of around a decade, Black Clover officially reached its end on May 1, 2026. However, there are other projects, including manga that Black Clover gave birth to, that some fans may be unaware of.
In 2020, the Black Clover Quartet Knights spin-off series, written by Yumiya Tashiro and supervised by Yuki Tabata, ended. Instead of Asta, this story focuses largely on Yami. For the occasion of Black Clover’s conclusion, this spin-off has now made a brief return as Yumiya Tashiro, the creator, published a new illustration featuring younger Yami and Asta. This makes us hopeful for the future of the spin-off series. With the successful anime of Black Clover set to return on October 3, 2026, Quartet Knights could also get an anime adaptation.
Black Clover Spin-Off Writer Yumiya Tashiro Releases New Illustration for Black Clover’s Ending
Black Clover has cemented itself as a hit for the popular shonen magazine, Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump. The series experienced a great high of popularity in the late 2010s and early 2020s, so much so that it eventually got its own spinoff series. Not every manga gets a spinoff, but those that are popular enough do usually have a couple to expand the scope even further. Out of the few spin-off series that Black Clover got, Black Clover: Quartet Knights by author Yumiya Tashiro certainly stood out as a highlight. While this spin-off is written by a different author, it is still supervised by Yuki Tabata, meaning that some of the elements and story present in the spin-off are canon to his own ideas pertaining to the world of Black Clover.
Black Clover: Quartet Knights had quite a successful run. While the spin-off initially kicked off on October 7, 2018, with the release of its first chapter on Shonen Jump+, it eventually ended about two years later on April 12, 2020. Its final volume marked its proper conclusion and was released on October 2, 2020. All in all, this spinoff series was collected into 6 volumes and spanned over 42 chapters in total. The story of Quartet Knight might have ended, but recently, its creator, Yumiya Tashiro, responsible for the story and art of the spinoff, made a brief return. This return was observed on the social media platform X on August 14, 2026. With this return on his X Platform (@hot_monkey), he posted a new illustration in his iconic style for the spinoff series.
In this new illustration, Yumiya Tashiro highlighted the focus of his manga: a younger Yami, and by his side, Asta as well, as the protagonist of the original story. He also drops a brief message congratulating Yuki Tabata for concluding his manga, a tough accomplishment, especially for someone like Tabata who has been dealing with many health issues. Clearly, Yumiya Tashiro cares deeply for the Black Clover series, and he feels great pride in the spin-off he created.
“Finally, Black Clover has concluded!
Thank you so much for the hot battle fantasy all the way to the end!!!
Getting to draw the spin-off is a treasure for life for me!!
Mr. Tabata, thank you for all your hard work!!!
Black Clover forever!!!!” — Yumiya Tashiro
What originally started as a spin-off to promote a Black Clover video game by the same name for Bandai Namco, has now become its own expansive and beloved project.
Black Clover: Quartet Knights Focuses On Yami and His Early Days In The Clover Kingdom
Many fans of Tabata’s story have never explored the spinoff named Black Clover: Quartet Knights. To many, the spinoff might seem like an obscure side story, but it features quite a captivating plot worth delving into. As previously mentioned, this manga was originally released as promotion for the Black Clover video game, titled “Black Clover Quartet Knights.” With that being said, the story of this manga and the story of the video game do not correlate aside from being used as promotional content.
The manga focuses on a younger version of Yami, the captain of the Black Bulls, who has stood as one of the most popular characters of the series. Over six volumes, we get to explore a non-canon event where Yami acts as the main protagonist. Yuki Tabata might have provided the story, but it is not canon and acts more like a “what if” alternate universe. We know that because of many clashing events. In this story, Yami’s age is reversed, and he turns 14. His memories also become fuzzy, but a new captivating plot emerges from his past. A new enemy named Karna rises to be defeated with the joint efforts of Yami and the Black Bulls.
With the original story of Black Clover having concluded on May 1, 2026, with the release of chapter 392 in Jump GIGA’s Spring Edition, it might be time for fans to give this spin-off series a shot, especially for fans of Yami yearning for his return.
The Future of Black Clover: Quartet Knights After The Manga End
Black Clover: Quartet Knights is one of the most ambitious spin-off series of the franchise. It features its own plot, introduces new characters, and expands on already existing ones like Yami. The story is captivating, and the art is great. It is definitely the best spin-off series that Black Clover has to offer, but despite everything, it remains quite unpopular when compared to the original manga. In large part, that is because of the lack of exposure. To become truly mainstream, manga series need an anime adaptation to reach general audiences. Black Clover has an ongoing anime adaptation that is set to return with Season 2 on October 3, 2026. This anime adaptation is set to revive the franchise as a whole and take the series to new heights of popularity with a new, exciting arc: the Spade Kingdom Raid, where fans can expect to see high-octane fights and terrifying villains.
Any dedicated fans of Black Clover would wish for Black Clover: Quartet Knights to someday receive an anime adaptation of its own. At the moment, there is no information about an adaptation of the spin-off series. However, as seen with other franchises, like My Hero Academia and its Vigilantes spin-off, it can eventually happen if the franchise is popular enough. With Black Clover’s anime return, there will be demand for more content expanding the world. Hopefully, Studio Pierrot considers adapting Yami’s story after Asta’s adventure ends.
All chapters of Black Clover by Yuki Tabata are available to read via Manga Plus.
