Netflix recently unveiled the official trailer for its upcoming limited series called The New Stanford Prison Experiment. It is a new reality show where 30 participants willingly enter the prison and perform their assigned roles. Unlike other reality shows, the upcoming series will be entirely unscripted, but executive producer Jane Lipsitz assured fans that it is a different time with more effective safeguards. However, the trailer garnered different reactions from netizens.

“This country is so fascinated with prison and jail. It’s truly weird,” X user @LordShaq2 wrote.

“Netflix really said “what if we do the Stanford Prison Experiment AGAIN, but this time put them in an actual prison?” This is either going to be fascinating or deeply uncomfortable to watch.” X user @YoungboiCypher replied.

“Can’t really replicate the original experiment. If they know people will see it all on Netflix they will change their behaviour for image purposes. Also they all know about the original experiment and what they are not supposed to do unlike the people from the original experiment,” X user @B_RoyaIe commented.

“This already went really bad the first time…” X user @BluePlutoKylo remarked.

“Did we not learn from the last one??” X user @dearycore asked.

This is the official synopsis of the upcoming show:

“Thirty willing participants enter a real prison and are randomly assigned as guards or prisoners. Thrust into a system of power, hierarchy, and control, they’ll discover whether ordinary people inevitably conform to the roles they’re given—or whether empathy, morality, and individuality can withstand the forces pushing them in the opposite direction. As the pressure builds and the balance of power begins to shift, the central question feels more urgent than ever: Does power corrupt?“

The idea here is for Netflix to replicate the 1971 psychological study, but in different terms. Everyone involved in the show participated willingly, but some users are not happy about the streaming platform transforming it into a limited series. Viewers will witness how the participants play their roles or how power changes them inside the prison. The New Stanford Prison Experiment will be released on October 21, 2026, only on Netflix.
