One of the contracts in The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine is the Tufo Monster, which involves a deadly Shaelmaar (and a love affair). The Tofu Monster has deadly monsters and a moral conundrum, which is why you’re going to want to use a comprehensive guide that will take you through each investigation step and get you the best possible rewards, all found below!
How to Start Contract: The Tufo Monster in The Witcher 3
Head south of the Cockatrice Inn to find Flovive, where you’ll be able to pick up and read the Contract: The Monster of Tufo from the noticeboard. Now, take a short walk north to find Jean-Christophe de Bourbeau at the Tofu Vineyard, who you can speak with about the contract.
Jean-Christophe is fairly rude, so feel free to respond to his demands with “I’ll call you whatever I want,” and then haggle for better pay. Just to really get what you deserve out of him. Regardless of what you say, he will give you a key to the cellar.
Investigate the Cellar
You must visit the cellar at night, where, while examining things with your Witcher Senses, an earthquake will occur. You can now find a crack in the wall that can be blasted open with Aard.
Inside, you’ll find tunnels, and you can follow them along to the right side to find Kikimores, and then another wall to break with Aard. Inside this final room is a large Kikimore Warrior, so kill them all and use Igni on the eggs. You can then investigate the cracks on the floor in the north room (and find more eggs to burn).
Once your investigation is complete, the eggs are destroyed, and the Kikimores are slain, return to the surface where you will meet Jean-Christophe and his wife, Andree de Bourbeau, who request that you find their missing worker, Jean-Luc.
Destroying all the eggs will reward you with 100 Crowns and 200 XP from Jean-Christoph.
Find and Kill the Monster of Tufo (& Get the Silver Pendant)
With your new task to find Jean-Luc, you can head through the vineyard to find an abandoned picnic site. Use your Witcher Senses, and you will find two sets of footprints. Follow the left track to the west, and you’ll discover a cave, which you can follow deeper into to eventually find the Shalmaar’s lair.
You will need to pick up the Fresh Human Blood from Jean-Luc’s corpse, but by his left foot is a Silver Pendant that you’ll want to pick up for later. For now, enter the Alchemy tab and craft the Shaelmaar Bait from your Quest items with x1 Fresh Human Blood and x3 Sewant Mushrooms (they’re all over the cave walls).
Press R1/RB to spread the Shaelmaar Bait across the lair, and the boss fight will begin. It’s fairly easy; you just need to use Aard on the walls to bait it into charging, and when it crashes into a wall, it will flail helplessly on its back and allow you to strike its vulnerable stomach until it dies. When it’s slain, loot it for the Shaelmaar Trophy and the Ami sword.
Should You Give the Pendant to Jean-Christophe or Andree?
Once you have the Silver Pendant and the Shaelmaar Trophy, it’s time to return to the Tofu Vineyard. However, don’t go to the cellar to speak to Jean-Christophe just yet. Instead, you’ll find Andree sitting by the building to the right of the cellar, and you can give her the pendant for 200 XP and 120 Crowns for keeping her affair a secret.
The reason you should do this instead of giving the pendant to Jean-Christophe is that he will abandon his wife and leave her homeless. He’s also not a very nice man, so it’s obvious why they don’t have a relationship.
Regardless of your choice, speak with Jean-Christophe to collect your reward for killing the Monster of Tufo, which will reward you with 500+ Crowns and 400 XP.
