78-year-old grandma becomes world’s oldest female Fortnite streamer

A 78-year-old Scottish grandmother has officially claimed the world record for the oldest female Fortnite streamer.

Cath Bowie, from Aberdeen, Scotland, was watching her grandson play Fortnite in 2017, when the game was in its infancy. She said she was “instantly intrigued” by the game.

Cath made her own Fortnite account in 2018 and began streaming gameplay online under the alias ‘grumpygran48’, a name suggested by her granddaughter.

Her grandson said nobody would watch her

Cath was motivated by a comment from her grandson, who said nobody would watch or join her because of her age. “Saying that was like a red rag to a bull to me. I would show him that I could do it. 24,000+ followers later and he doesn’t mention it. I wonder why?,” she said.

Cath sets goals for herself that aren’t always traditional wins, in order to challenge herself during each game. Her positivity and “infectious laugh” have led her to build a community that consistently follow her streams.

Cath celebrated her 78th birthday on September 1 and was recently crowned by the Guinness World Records as the oldest female Fortnite streamer.

Cath said she has tried many other games but doesn’t get the same excitement as she does from Fortnite. As a result, she has called herself a ‘Fortniter’ more than a gamer.

“I’m incredibly thankful to my wonderful family, who have encouraged me throughout the last nine years of playing, and to the many friends I’ve played with along the way,” said Cath. “Never let age stop you. If I can do it, so can you.”
