A YouTuber who spent years waiting for Apple to release its AirPower wireless charger eventually took matters into his own hands, building a desk-sized version of the canceled product.
Apple first unveiled AirPower alongside the iPhone X in 2017, promising a wireless charging mat capable of charging compatible devices placed anywhere on its surface. However, the product never made it to consumers, with Apple officially canceling AirPower in 2019.
After realizing the product he had been waiting for was never coming, the YouTuber decided to build his own version. Rather than simply recreating Apple’s charging mat, he spent two months turning the concept into an entire desk capable of automatically locating and charging devices.
YouTuber turns Apple’s canceled AirPower into a desk
Apple’s AirPower concept relied on multiple charging coils beneath its surface, allowing users to place their devices in different positions without needing to carefully line them up with a single coil.
Scaling that approach up to an entire desk would have required around 600 charging coils, according to the YouTuber, so he came up with a different solution.
Instead, the desk uses a camera to detect where a phone has been placed. That information is sent to motors beneath the surface, which physically move a wireless charging coil into position below the device.
His initial prototype worked, but the motors were slow and the moving cables underneath the desk created problems. He later upgraded the motors and developed a cable reel system to manage the wiring as the charger moved around.
The finished version takes the concept significantly further. The desktop itself doubles as a transparent display, with an animated cat appearing beneath a device and moving with the charging coil as it travels into position.
Once one device is charged, the system can search for another and move the coil underneath it. Two fixed charging coils were also installed in a corner of the desk for additional devices, while a receiver underneath the keyboard allows that to charge wirelessly as well.
The desk also contains a Mac Mini and can be connected to a monitor to function as a computer.
Beyond wireless charging, the YouTuber built several productivity features into the desk. Users can enter tasks at the beginning of the day, with lights appearing as each one is completed.
The camera can also detect when someone has been sitting for an hour while the desk remains lowered. When that happens, the desk lights up and prompts the user to stand, with a button appearing on the surface that automatically raises it to a saved height.
Another feature uses an electromagnet beneath the desk to physically move a cup toward the user once an hour as a reminder to drink water.
A focus mode also appears when a phone is charging. Activating it starts a 25-minute timer underneath the device. If the phone is picked up before the timer ends, the desk temporarily refuses to charge it when it is placed back down.
After waiting nine years for Apple’s original idea, the creator dubbed his finished version the “Air Power Pro Max Ultra Plus,” combining wireless charging with a computer, transparent display, standing desk controls and productivity tools.
It is not the only ambitious custom tech project to emerge from YouTuber.
Earlier in 2026, creator 小宁子 XNZ built an all-in-one console combining the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2 into a single machine. The project used components from all three systems alongside a custom cooling setup, allowing users to switch between each console without needing three separate devices.
