She-Hulk actress Tatiana Maslany calls out Tom Selleck and Michael Jordan for not commenting on political issues.
Popular actress Tatiana Maslany of She-Hulk fame recently spoke up about artists having a social responsibility, and condemned artists like Tom Selleck and Michael Jordan for not raising their voices on political matters. In an interview with Mehdi Hasan, the actress went on to call them cowardly, stating that she found the mentality “bizarre.”
“It’s such a bizarre mentality. It’s so cowardly.”
Hasan and Maslany were in conversation about artists raising their voices in terms of political matters, when Hasan brought up the topic of Tom Selleck. In a CNN interview, Selleck had been asked why he does not express his opinion in political matters, especially related to Donald Trump. The Magnum P.I. star had responded saying,
“I stay out of the current political world. Why p*ss off half the country when you’re in the business of entertaining people?”
Michael Jordan also had a similar response when asked about his political silence.
“Republicans buy sneakers, too.”
Tatiana Maslany, however, claimed that she believes this to be a very cowardly mentality because artists have a social responsibility to raise their voices because people listen.

During her interview with Mehdi Hasan on the Zeteo podcast, Maslany opened up about how art and politics go hand-in-hand. She claimed that artists were like a mirror to society, so it is an intrinsic part of their job to be political.
“Artists are like mirrors to the world, to society. We have to name things. It’s, like, such an important, intrinsic part of our job.”
When presented with the counter-argument by citing examples of Tom Selleck and Michael Jordan, Maslany went on to say,
“All entertainment is political, because it has a viewpoint, and it has a perspective. It has visual representation of the world we live in or the kinds of things that are funny or acceptable.”
She then directly addressed the topic of Selleck and Jordan, claiming that they stood to lose a lot if they opened up about their political viewpoint.
“There’s no disconnect, in my mind. And, to me, those are two very rich men who stand to lose a lot if they stand up for something.”
