Over the years, robotics companies have been trying to get better at developing robots that function just like humans. Getting the fluid movement down has, for a lot of them, been tricky. For the most part, humanoids have become helpers around the home, using their limited functions to clean up behind you or provide companionship.
However, in the case of REK – a robotics company based in California – they’ve been developing robots that are a little more advanced than that.
They have been building bots that bring the ‘Real Steel’ movie to life, with the fighting machines landing serious blows thanks to input from their human pilots.
REK’s Terminator vs Human fight goes viral
Influencer Frankie LaPenna found that out when he took on REK’s ‘Terminator’ in the “first Human vs Terminator robot fight” on September 18.
The robotics company has posted videos of the bout online, showing LaPenna facing off against the six-foot-tall robot in a perspex cage. While the influencer landed some decent strikes on the real-life T800, it fought back in a big way.
REK’s bot and pilot landed multiple kicks on LaPenna, one that forced him into the perspex wall and another that sent him flying across the mat, with the influencer struggling to get back to his feet.
The videos have gone viral on social media, with the robotics company calling it a “turning point in history.”
They also added that the robot “wasn’t even the final boss,” suggesting they’ve got even more up their sleeve.
As noted, the robots do have pilots giving input on their fight plan, with REK even hosting trials to get the right people in control.
There have been robot fights before, with China hosting the world’s first robot martial arts tournaments, but this marks a big step when it comes to robots fighting humans.
