Valkyrae responds to fans accusing her YouTube livestream thumbnails of being “AI slop” and defends her thumbnail artist Anko

Twitch streamer Valkyrae has addressed accusations that her YouTube livestream thumbnails are made using AI, after some fans labeled the artwork as “AI slop”. She said she understands why people may have assumed that, while defending the artist responsible for creating her thumbnails.
The discussion began after her official thumbnail artist, Anko, shared artwork created for one of Valkyrae’s Uncharted playthrough streams on August 14, 2026. Although the thumbnail received a positive reception, some viewers questioned whether AI had been used to make it, prompting Valkyrae to address the claims during a stream two days later.
Valkyrae Responds to “AI Slop” Accusations
Anko, who creates Valkyrae’s YouTube livestream thumbnails, shared the Uncharted artwork on August 14. The artist has also regularly posted videos showing the process behind his work, often adding the process footage in the comments of his artwork posts. Despite this, some viewers questioned whether the thumbnail had been generated using AI. The criticism gained enough attention for Valkyrae to address the allegations during her August 16 stream.
Valkyrae explained that Anko is responsible for creating all of her YouTube livestream thumbnails. She also acknowledged that she could understand why viewers might think the artwork was AI-generated:
“Okay. We have to talk about this thumbnail debacle. I don’t know what to do about this thumbnail debacle. So, as most of you know, every single one of my YouTube livestream thumbnails is made by the same artist. His name is Anko, and he makes all of them. He even posts on Twitter the art process of making them, but it still never beats the AI allegations. And the most recent thumbnail, he makes new thumbnails when I start a new game series, so, obviously, there is a new thumbnail for the Uncharted era. And people were saying, ‘Oh, it’s AI slop,’ in the pre-chat”
The streamer also pointed viewers toward Anko’s artwork process videos, which show how he creates the thumbnails. She said she does not blame people for making the assumption, despite the artist documenting his work. She also stated:
Just ignore them.’ Well, no. Okay? I don’t blame people for thinking it’s AI because AI is using people’s art, like Anko’s, to take over. But I would like to clear it up because there were a few people that were saying, ‘Oh! When I saw the thumb, I also thought it was AI.’ So now I am wondering how many people are out there that would watch the stream, but didn’t because of the AI-looking thumbnail! But it’s not AI.
Anko’s habit of publicly sharing his creation process has also given viewers a closer look at how the thumbnails are produced. As AI-generated artwork becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from traditionally created digital art, the incident shows how quickly questions about authenticity can spread online.
