A former Thai MP called a YouTuber during a livestream and confessed to shooting a senior local official, who later died from his injuries.
Chalong Reawraeng, a former three-term MP, is accused of opening fire at the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organisation offices near Bangkok at around 11am on August 10.
The alleged target was 71-year-old Thongchai Yenprasert, president of the provincial organisation and a former police colonel.
Thongchai was rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds to his face and neck but later died. His driver was shot in the arm and remains in stable condition after undergoing surgery.
Former MP calls YouTuber after shooting
Moments after the attack, Chalong phoned YouTuber and political commentator Anchalee Paireerak while she was broadcasting live on the Naewna Online YouTube channel.
Anchalee initially told Chalong she was on air and would call him back. However, she quickly realized he was claiming to have just shot Thongchai.
“You need to wait there for the cops. Don’t go anywhere,” she told him during the broadcast, according to The Independent.
Anchalee’s team contacted police while she reportedly convinced Chalong to put down his weapon and remain at the scene. At one point, he could be heard announcing that police had arrived before confirming he had surrendered his gun.
Local outlet MGR Online reported that Chalong claimed he fired four or five shots following a dispute over an alleged debt of 11 million baht (around $333,000 USD).
While in police custody, Chalong again admitted to opening fire and described Thongchai as a longtime friend. He claimed he confronted the official over the money but was refused a conversation.
“But when he was driving away, he pulled a gun,” Chalong told reporters. “I fired.”
Police said a firearm was found inside Thongchai’s vehicle but had not been discharged. CCTV footage allegedly showed only Chalong firing at close range, according to an AFP report.
This isn’t the first time someone has been killed near government buildings. In 2024, a YouTuber stabbed his rival to death on stream outside a courthouse amid a legal dispute between the two.
