Soccer match goes viral after loose ball flies into traffic and causes crash

A stray ball that flew off the pitch during a soccer match in Uruguay resulted in an SUV rear-ending another car.

Uruguay Montevideo and Paysandú FC were pitted against each other in the Uruguayan Segunda Professional, the second tier of Uruguay’s professional soccer league division system.

The game, played at the Parque ANCAP stadium in Montevideo, ended 1-0 to the home team. However, an off-pitch incident involving a car ended up being the biggest talking point of the game.

Ball flew directly from pitch onto busy road

In the 24th minute of the match, when Paysandú were on the counter-attack following a Montevideo corner, it fell to a Montevideo defender just past the half-way line.

The defender cleared his lines, launching the ball out of play, and out of the stadium. It landed on a busy road beside the pitch, forcing a white car to brake. A second vehicle, a black SUV, crashed right into the back of it as a result.

The footage was captured by the television broadcasters, and promptly went viral online soon after. Some Reddit users commented on the close proximity between the highway and the pitch.

“There’s no way that’s the first time this has happened judging by how low that fence is,” one user wrote. Another saw the funny side: “Is that a yellow or red card to the car that tackled from behind?”
