Gaming convention attendees forced to shelter after roof leaks and tornado warning

Gen Con 2026 in Indianapolis was disrupted on August 1 after heavy rainfall caused the roof of the Indiana Convention Center to leak heavily onto the convention floor.

A tornado warning shortly after forced attendees to shelter in place.

Gen Con, the largest tabletop gaming convention in North America drawing tens of thousands of attendees each year for board games, tabletop RPGs and card games, saw the 54-year-old venue’s roof begin leaking as heavy rain hit the city throughout the day.

Flooding first broke out in Hall B, with a heavy stream of water pouring for around 20 minutes before spreading to multiple areas of the building.

Play-test area takes the worst of the damage

The worst damage occurred in the convention’s play-test area, where hundreds of attendees were trying out tabletop games including Everdell, Canvas and Bloodrage.

Gen Con staff wheeled out large trash containers in a mostly ineffective attempt to catch the water and vendors scrambled to move their merchandise out of the affected areas as the flooding spread.

According to IndyStar, as the rain continued, attendees received mobile alerts for a tornado warning covering Marion County. Convention officials used loudspeakers to instruct people to shelter in place, move away from windows, and avoid enclosed or exterior rooms.

The warning was called off several hours later, though it caused significant confusion among attendees in the meantime.

It marks the first weather disruption of its kind for Gen Con since the event relocated to Indianapolis in 2003. Organizers confirmed the convention’s scheduled Sunday events would still go ahead.

It is not the first time flooding has caused chaos at a major convention. In 2025, anime convention Katsucon had to be evacuated after a wastewater pipe burst above its artist alley, ruining merchandise and forcing an early closure.
